The Jianghu is full of bloody battles and fights. The eight main sects dispatch disciples to spy on the other sects, in order to gather intelligence. The Imperial Court also secretly employs spies to find out what goes on within the Jianghu, so it is best for people to use stealth tactics to stay one step ahead of others.
Spying is a great way of gaining experience, Liang currency, and Sect Honor Certificates. You'll spy on other sects to gather intelligence from wandering NPCs. If successful, you'll return back to your sect to share your acquired knowledge, and reap the rewards!
How do I become a Spy?
Players with strength who have reached Novice can join the Jianghu Spy network. The player can spy on other sects at any time, although there is a limit of spying five times a day.
Option A (recommended)
Each week your sect's leader NPC will offer you a quest, where you can spy on four different sectss (four times at each sect). During that week you can talk to your sect's leader NPC and he will teleport you directly to the sect's scene. If you do not manage to complete the quest requirements of sect spying sixteen times in that week, your sect's leader NPC will not have the option to instantly teleport you to the sect scene until you complete and accept the quest again during another week. It just means you'll need to spend more time to manually travel to the desired sect, which is why we marked this method as the recommended way to spy.
Once you arrive in the sect scene, click "N" to open your Jianghu interface. Click the "Sect" tab, then click "Sects Spying", and click "Join". You will be transported to a random location in that sect's scene.
If you do not manage to complete the 16 spy quest requirements each week to take advantage of the instant teleport from the sect leader NPC, you must travel manually to the sect's scene until you complete and accept the quest during another week. Head over to the main city that is closest to the sect you want to spy on.
Chengdu - Emei, Tang
Luoyang - Wudang, Shaolin
Yanjing - Royal Guards, Beggar's Sect
Suzhou - Blissful Valley, Scholar's Academy
Visit the Officer Stagecoach and travel to the desired sect. Once you have entered the sect scene, you can get off the carriage before arriving to your destination since you just want to be in that scene.
Once you arrive, click "N" to open your Jianghu interface. Click the "Sect" tab, then click "Sects Spying", and click "Join". You will be transported to a random location in that sect's scene.
In the picture below you'll see the blue circle represents the random location I was sent to. The intelligence disciples you want to spy on can be scattered throughout the scene, although most of your targets will be around the main sect area (red circle in the picture). Just check your map to see where you should go.
Woot! I'm a Spy! Now what do I do?
The mission of spying is simple - infiltrate other sects and steal ingelligence from Intelligence Disciples. A fun fact is that these Intelligence Disciples are actually players' characters that perform offline duties of being an important NPC for spying.
Also keep an eye out for Planted Agents. These NPCs wander around the sect, and if you select their dialogue option, they'll give you one piece of intelligence.
Once you start spying, a small interface box will appear in the top-right corner of your interface. This box tracks how many pieces of intelligence you have acquired from Intelligence Disciples. You can acquire a maximum of 10 pieces of intelligence, although you only need to acquire 1 piece of intelligence to meet the base requirements of the weekly spy quest from your school leader. However, the more pieces of intelligence you acquire, the greater the rewards.
Players that become spies will gain three abilities that will allow them to gather the precious intelligence they seek.
Thieving Hand - Get close to an Intelligence Disciple, target the character, and press this skill. This skill will give you one piece of intelligence, although there is a small chance your attempt will fail and you will obtain 20 points of vulnerability (see below for explanation) instead.
Ambush - Get close to an Intelligence Disciple, target the character, and press this skill. This skill will give you three pieces of intelligence, although there is a high chance your attempt will fail and you will obtain 100 points of vulnerability instead.
Stealing the Sky, Replacing the Sun - Target an Intelligence Disciple and press this skill. This skill will likely give you three pieces of intelligence, as well as a Small Training Scroll of Level 1 internal Skills from the opposing sect. If you fail in the use of this technique, your Vulnerability will increase by 50 points.
*In order to use this technique, you must expend a Move Like a Shadow Pill. This item can be bought with silver from any Elite Patrol Disciple.
Oh no! I've been exposed as a spy!
Spying on other sects doesn't come without its risks, and there are a couple things to be mindful of as a spy.
At the bottom of your spy skill interface you'll see a blank meter, which represents your Vulnerability Value. Different actions may cause your Vulnerability Value to increase. Reaching 80 points of Vulnerability will expose you as a spy, which means any player that is on sect patrol can attack your character. Your character will be easily noticed as being exposed as a spy with a flashing red symbol above your character. If you die as a spy, you will fail your current spy mission, lose any acquired pieces of intelligence, and will need to start over again.
Ways that your Vulnerability Value can increase:
- There is a small chance to gain 20 points of vulnerability when using Thieving Hand (1st skill) or Stealing the Sky, Replacing the Sun (3rd skill), or high chance to gain 100 points of vulnerability when using Ambush (2nd skill).
- Patrolling disciples will randomly emit an aura around them. If your character is close to them when the aura goes off, you will gain 10 points of vulnerability.
- Other players that are taking part in Sect Patrol (opposite of Spying) have their own set of skills that can increase your vulnerability by 30 points or 100 points. Players that are on Sect Patrol can be recognized by a flashing orange/yellow symbol above their character, so keep your distance from these guys!
Turning in Gathered Intelligence and Rewards
After you are satisfied with the amount of intelligence you have acquired, open your Foothold interface "T", and teleport back to your sect. Find the Intelligence Chief and click the dialogue option - "Check the reward information for successful spying".
Below you can see how much experience, Liang, and Jackdaw Herbs you can receive from turning in 10 pieces of intelligence. Remember you can also gain 70 Sect Honor Certificates for completing the weekly spy quest. Lastly, you also gain Sect Contribution points.
Each main sect of Wulin competes with each other. Even the Imperial Court meddles in the struggles of Jianghu. This turmoil within the Jianghu has the same appearance of warring factions. Eight main sects recruit the elites to join the sect patrol in order to maintain some sense of peace.
On the flip side of spying, you can patrol your sect for other players that try to spy on your sect.
How do I start School Patrol?
Players with strength reaching Novice and who have joined a sect can join the Sect Patrol. There is no time limit for Sect Patrol, and players can join Sect Patrol 20 times per day. When you are in your sect scene, click "N" to open your Jianghu interface. Click the "Sect" tab, then click "Sect Patrol", and click "Join".
Spies, beware! I am on Sect Patrol! Um, now what do I do?
You'll immediately notice a flashing orange/yellow symbol above your character's head. This will show other players that you are on Sect Patrol.
Players that are on Sect Patrol will gain two abilities that will allow them to expose spies.
Spy Identification - Get close to a player that is not from your sect, target the character, and press this skill. This skill will make your target gain 30 Vulnerability points, and you'll see a message that says "You search [Player name] but find nothing unusual". If spies' Vulnerability points reach at least 80 points, they will be exposed as spies, and you can attack them.
See through the Truth - Get close to a player that is not from your sect, target the character, and press this skill. This skill will make your target gain 80 Vulnerability points.
*In order to use this technique, you must expend an Intelligence Book. This item can be bought with silver from any Elite Patrol Disciple.
Turning in Gathered Intelligence and Rewards
Players, who take part in sect patrol, gain a buff that increases the speed at which experience is converted within the sect.
Killing an identified spy allows you to loot the intelligence from the spy's body. After handing it to the Intelligence Chief, you'll gain an experience reward and have the opportunity to gain other special items.
